Neighborhood Farms

HdN-1

A farm in the Weserbergland has dead wood from its forest floor from storm damage and vermin infestation due to dry periods.

The association Terra Preta e.V. is now planning to procure a medium-sized pyrolysis plant (330,000 kg biochar p.a.).

The farm uses it to carbonize its own wood waste and that of its neighboring farms in the by-order process. The neighbors come with a truckload of dead wood and receive the biochar in return. The price for this carbonization service is 100 € / t biochar.

Despite the low sales prices, this service is profitable for the above farm. The acquisition costs are partly borne by subsidies, by grants from the association and only to a small extent by the farm itself. As a result, the depreciation costs of the plant itself are relatively low. The main operating costs are service, wage costs, water, etc.

HdN-2

The farmer on the farm mixes the biochar with crop residues to make Bokashi or, when using manure from their own animal husbandry, to make Terra Preta.

After a maturing period of approx. 3 months under a film (in a low-oxygen atmosphere), the Terra Preta can be used directly on its fields.
